Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do I have to have a consultation? A personalized consultation before treatment ensures that Dr. Baldwin has a comprehensive understanding of your health needs, preferences, and goals, enabling her to develop a tailored treatment plan that optimizes your health and well-being. It sets the foundation for a collaborative and patient-centered approach to healthcare, where you are actively involved in decisions about your health and treatment options.

2. How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. For complex or long-standing conditions, one or two treatments per week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, usually few visits are required and for health maintenance we recommend monthly tune-ups.

3. Do the needles hurt? Acupuncture sensations vary from person to person, but most people describe it as a mild sensation or no pain at all. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, and the insertion technique is gentle. Some individuals may feel a brief pinch or tingling sensation upon needle insertion, but any discomfort typically subsides quickly. Many people find acupuncture to be relaxing and soothing, with minimal discomfort during treatment. Communication with your acupuncturist about your comfort level is key, and they can adjust their techniques to ensure a comfortable experience.

4. Are the needles reusable? No, acupuncture needles are not reusable. Acupuncture needles are designed for single-use only and are disposed of after each treatment to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of infection. Reusing needles would pose a significant risk of transmitting bloodborne pathogens and other contaminants between patients. To ensure safety and adherence to strict hygiene standards, acupuncturists use sterile, disposable needles for each individual treatment. This practice aligns with regulatory guidelines and professional standards to protect the health and well-being of patients.

5. What the needles made of? Acupuncture needles are typically made of stainless steel, which is known for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel needles are the most common type used in acupuncture due to their reliability and safety. They are sterile, solid, and thin, with a smooth surface to minimize discomfort during insertion. While stainless steel is the predominant material, acupuncture needles may also be made of other metals such as silver, gold, or copper, although these are less common. Regardless of the material used, acupuncture needles are manufactured to strict quality standards and are designed for single-use only to ensure safety and hygiene.

6. What conditions does acupuncture treat? Acupuncture can treat many conditions from chronic pain to neurological conditions, digestive issues to physiological disorders and much more.
